Geographical Distribution 

Dharmshala is situated beautifully at the height of 1457 meters in the Kangra Valley. It is blissfully surrounded by the Dhauladhar Himalayan mountains. The town is at 18 km distance from Kangra city. Dharamshala is distinctly divided into two major parts, first ‘Lower Dharmshala’ which is the main city area where all the markets are located, and the second is a mountainous area called McLeodGanj. Dharamshala is surrounded by dense forests of Deodar cedar trees. The place is also known for its tea plantations and its varieties like green, black, oolong and masala tea are popular all over the country. The tea from this area is famously popular as Kangra Green Tea.

Weather and Best time to visit

In the summer season i.e. from March to June, the temperature here remains in the range of 250C – 350C. In monsoon months, from July to September, the temperature is between 180C – 220C. The winter starting from October to February is the most pleasant time to enjoy snowfall. The temperature in winter is between 40C – 70C.

If you are planning to visit Dharamshala, then the best time to visit in the winter. Starting from October through February, the weather is beautifully cool with occasional snowfall. One can visit Dharmshala during early summer season also when the temperature is not too hot. However, visiting Dharmshala during monsoon should be avoided on the account of heavy rainfall.

By Air: The nearest airport is Dharamshala Airport, situated at Gaggal. Air India and Spice Jet flights run here from Delhi. 

By Train: The nearest railway station is Pathankot. From here train to Jogindernagar runs towards Dharmshala. 

By Road: Dharmshala is easily connected to other states via inter-state bust transport services. You can easily get buses from Chandigarh, Delhi, Jaipur etc. Once in Himachal Pradesh, the state transport services are easily available to go anywhere in the state.   • The War Memorial
